The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, not just his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
