"When are you speaking to Haim?" a message arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: I also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile fans have openly begged for the honor.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the greatest ensembles, they're a inseparable unit. Their videos often feature them walking in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such boundless happiness you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage people to start a band."

"And thus all are welcome to be the next Haim sister."

Award Recognition

The trio have called into their homes, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the honor isn't lost on the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the female artists that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The project was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that odd in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The words follow endings and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them working out in the moment who they want to be.

"I love description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That developed toughness called for a different sonic direction – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Camaraderie

The trio's openness shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an worldwide fan base.

Yet the sister act will consistently be their number one focus.

"We have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still kicking."
