Background of Criticism and Rules

The tool has been condemned for permitting users to produce pictures and footage with explicit content and sexually suggestive material, and it was in the past alleged to have been involved in making sexually explicit content of public figures.

"X has been permitting the production and distribution of these pictures for months without taking any measures and we have yet to see any intervention by regulators," the expert added.

XAI's own terms of service prohibits "portraying images of people in a graphic way".

In a comment, Ofcom said it was illegal to "make or circulate non-consensual intimate images or illegal content" and confirmed this applied to explicit AI images made with AI.

It said platforms such as X were mandated to take "necessary measures" to "lessen the risk" of users encountering unlawful material on their services and to remove it swiftly when they learn of it.
